I remember FM radio as a commercial free bastion of GREAT and very diverse music spread out all over the many frequencies. Not today. When something new comes into my musical life it is usually discovered on the internet or the rare radio program like Jonathan Schwartz on Sirius and Jazz FM broadcast out of Toronto. My mission on this blog is to post music I love that you may not hear elsewhere.Someone - I don't know who - recently stated "Music is what emotions sound like" Exactly!

Peggy Lee - Cats & Rainbows
Peggy Lee is one the great minimalist singers. No one gets so much said emotionally using so little in the manner of histrionics. She sighs, purrs and simply drips like thick sweet honey from a silver spoon. Here is Peggy singing two what use to be called novelty tunes. "The Siamese Cat Song" was composed and sung by Miss Peggy Lee for the animated Disney classic "The Lady and the Tramp". "Sing A Rainbow" was performed by Peggy in the movie "Pete Kelly's Blues" for which she earned an Academy Award nomination. Just a note about the two performances. The Cat song has Peggy amusingly voicing the singing cats AND the Rainbow song is sung in character. In the movie Peggy has been put in an asylum and reverts to being a little girl. As this little girl, she sings the Rainbow song sadly clutching a rag doll. Listen and be moved.

Love Peggy Lee.
ReplyDeleteGary, I'm a huge Peggy lee fan as was my father. There is a great Peggy Lee CD called The Man I Love that is he most extraordinary mood setter. It has the distinction of the orchestra backing Peggy being conducted by Frank Sinatra. It is my favorite Peggy Lee album especially the cut "The Folks Who Live On The Hill"
DeleteTony, have you ever seen Pete Kelly's Blues? She does superb singing AND acting work in it.
ReplyDeleteYes, Michael. I love her performance and have always wondered why she didn't continue with acting especially after receiving an Oscar nom. I read a recent biography and it is never even addressed.
DeleteI spent a great deal of time (MOSTly in my childhood) singing, "We are Siame-ese if you plea-ese... We are Siame-ese if you don't please {ba-bom-bom-bom}...". Good Stuff, T.!!
ReplyDeleteIt's always good stuff with Peggy Lee, Amber. I'll be posting more Peggy soon.
